Diego Maradona has died

It is now confirmed that Diego Armando Maradona suffered a cardiac arrest today and has died aged 60.

Argentine newspapers Clarin and Ole claim the World Cup winner suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest on Wednesday morning local time in the town of Tigre.

He had only turned 60 on October 30 and was released from hospital a couple of weeks ago following brain surgery.

Widely considered to be perhaps the greatest football player who ever lived, Maradona reached the peak of his career in Serie A with Napoli from 1984-91.

He also played for Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys before retiring back at Boca in 1997.

El Pibe de Oro then became a coach, including of the Argentina squad from 2008-10, most recently at Gimnasia La Plata.

His life and career were always overshadowed by addictions and recently his doctor had said he was relying on both medication and alcohol.
